Fun Fourth of July Facts

While I'm not necessarily a history buff, I do enjoy fun facts around special holidays. The following are some gems I stumbled onto regarding the fourth of July (sources at the bottom).
  • Originally, the FOJ became an official holiday in 1870 (although, for federal employees, it was an unpaid one). In 1938, it was changed to a paid holiday by congress.
  • Only one person signed the actual Declaration of Independence on the fourth. That lone signature belonged to John Hancock. Everyone else signed in the days following.
  • The first White House Independence Day party was held in 1801.
  • Massachusetts was the first state to recognize the FOJ as an actual holiday. This was in 1781.
  • There are approximately 15,000 fireworks shows surrounding Independence Day every year.
  • Approximately 150 million hot dogs will be consumed every fourth of July.
  • Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on July 4, 1826 and James Monroe died on July 4, 1831.
