DIY Graduation Gift

My niece just graduated from high school and is headed to Texas Tech in the fall. Her graduation party is this weekend with my whole family {it's going to be country comin' to town, people...that's how we roll}. I wanted to give her something that she could use at school...along with a little spending money {or laundry money} as well.

Inexpensive DIY Pencil Vase

This budget-friendly pencil vase is a fun craft to make for Teacher Appreciation Week gifts or teacher gifts for any time of the year, really. It's easy on the wallet with upcycled cans, inexpensive pencils, and a lot of love. It's also super cute and would be an adorable addition to anybody's classroom (or principal's office!). Galactic Playdough

I have a fun family activity for you today: DIY Galactic Playdough. This sensory stuff is from a galaxy far, far away...or your stovetop (we'll never tell!). It's also a lovely scented playdough, too.

I am in the midst of party-planning craziness for my just-turned-five-year-old. We're having a Star Wars party and our take-home favor is this Galactic Playdough. I adapted this recipe from a version of glitter playdough I've seen on Pinterest.  This would also be great in a sensory table or just to play with during a preschool's outer space unit. 

Popcorn Tin turned Dog Food Container

I saw this on Pinterest a while back, and of course, I can't figure out where I pinned the thing. So, if this is your original idea, feel free to let me know and I'll give you full credit. 

Every year at the holidays, a very sweet lady I work with sends me a big tin from The Popcorn Factory full of deliciousness. And it's gobbled by my kids in a day...two, maybe. 

I love the tins, but have a few of them now, and decided an upclycle was needed.

All the prep work that's needed for this is a good scrubbing. The tins from The Popcorn Factory are coated with a fancy rough texture...AKA, no sanding (score!). If you're using a tin from another place, you may need to do a light sanding (maybe even just with steel wool) to give it some tooth to hold the paint. 

All I used was Chalkboard paint and a foam roller. 

Definitely needed more than one coat.

After everything had dried for 24 hours, I grabbed a chalk pen & went to work.

I love these pens. The "chalk" wipes off with a wet sponge when you're ready to redecorate.

On the side, I write directions for anyone pet sitting for us. 

They're easy to wipe off when I don't need them. 

So easy!

PBKids Backpack Knock-off

I put together this backpack for my preschooler last year. As odd as this sounds, my two boys enjoy pouring over the Pottery Barn Kids catalog when it comes (I guess you can never start them too early, right?). This backpack is very similar to one of the $45 ones that PBKids carries....only this cost less than $10!!

Found these iron-on letters at HobLob for $3.99 and used my 40% coupon.

Also found these footballs, which apparently can now be bought online?!?! Didn't know HobLob had online shopping until today. VERY cool!!

I purchased the backpack from a local grocery store with great sales. I got it for $5 and used my seam ripper to remove the label that was where the football is. I then just followed the directions on the iron-on letters and football packages and attached them to the backpack. 

Easy Peasy.

This cheap little backpack held up great all year...although it only was used three days a week. However, it was always STUFFED with a blankie, lunch box and lots of sweet projects. The letters & football still look great. And I always had people asking where I bought it and even a few asking if it was the PBKids backpack!
