I went a little out of the box with this DIY Wax Paper Valentine's Banner, but I'm super happy with the way it came out. I did use the sewing machine for mine, but if you're from the no-sew camp, you can totally use glue. Check out the tutorial below.

This living room of ours has been a weird challenge...but I totally did it to myself. I wanted to keep just cooler-toned colors in here, so it's my one room I don't use any red in. That presents a bit of a challenge for both Christmas and Valentine's decor. To keep it fairly neutral, I tend to gravitate to whites. This wax paper Valentine's banner works well for the space, though...it started out as something else, but I'm really happy with the end result.

This banner took on a life of its own. I was trying to create faux capiz shells for a chandelier, but then grabbed my heart punch and thought a banner would be even more fun! I think it turned out like vellum...but for a fraction of the cost. It looks really delicate and lovely, but is actually quite durable. It worked great for this room without red! ;)

Creating a Wax Paper Valentine's Banner

Supplies

  • wax paper
    • I used about a quarter of a 75 square foot roll of a wax paper for this banner.
  • white or neutral thread
  • 3" heart punch (I wouldn't go smaller than this, it would be tricky to attach the hearts together)
  • iron/ironing board
  • sewing machine or glue

Directions:

  • Tear off several 12" squares of wax paper.
  • Adhere two sheets of wax paper together with an iron on medium. Layering them together like this makes them stiff, instead of the "floppy" quality the wax paper naturally has. It makes the end piece shiny, too...which, in turn, is fun to see it bounce off the lighting in a space.

  • Once your sheets are ironed together, cut them into 3" strips.
  • Punch hearts out of the strips.
  • If you get a little wax build-up on your punch, use a piece of aluminum foil and punch a few hearts on it. It will sharpen and clean your blade.

  • Once your hearts are cut, use the basic stitch and feed them through the sewing machine, layering them on the ends of each other.
  • If you prefer, you can glue them one at a time to your thread with small dots of glue. Again, using the sewing machine makes this go so fast...it's truly the way to go here, if you have that option.

 Isn't it fun?
My favorite part is the translucent aspect.

I draped my Valentine's banner onto my mantel for some simple seasonal decor.

I tried to just use simple metals and whites on the mantel...with the woods of the frames and mantel thrown in for some texture.
