I love the look of wood slices...I use them in lots of decor scenarios. I thought it would be fun to create a simple Christmas sign on one of these pieces...to give a bit of a rustic touch to our holiday fun around here. I've got the step-by-step plans for this below, along with an AWESOME giveaway and links to 40+ other holiday projects involved in this hop from other bloggers.

This project begins with large wood slices. I love these Basswood Country Rounds from Walnut Hollow. You can grab them here. I'm showing one of these below for this project. The other I plan to use in a similar manner (but I grabbed it in case I messed up...just to be completely up front here!).

I used vinyl lettering on my wood slice...you can purchase this at a craft store or cut your lettering with a craft cutter like I did. The fonts used here were Lolly Script and Black and White Display.

I wanted a natural look for my piece, so I didn't do two coats of paint like I usually do on these types of projects. Instead, I wanted the actual wood grain to show through. I sealed my lettering with a clear varnish. This ensures I wouldn't get any bleed through from my paint when it was applied.

I'm decorating with a lot of whites this year, so that's the direction I went. Using the darker ring on the slice as a guide, I painted an edge around the entire piece with my paint. Incidentally, I used a chalk-style paint here...I wanted that matte, chalk finish.

After the white outline was all around the outer edge, I filled it in with the rest of the white paint.

After the paint dried, I peeled off my lettering to reveal the wood finish. At this point, feel free to seal or wax this piece, if you prefer.
