It's that time of the year, y'all. Football is about to be in full effect. We're getting ready for all of the fun and hoopla on all ends...and getting our house ready to welcome guests for pre-game dinners. Check out how I put together this Football Door Hanging below.
So, the other night we were having dinner at the club...you know the one? Sam's Club, y'all. They have this fantastic Family Pizza Combo that we totally took advantage of. And you know what? We've even gone back for more...it's also great for entertaining! Amazing for our Friday night pregame parties before our favorite high school team hits the field.

We spend most Friday nights in the fall cheering on our football team. My husband is a high school principal...when it's our team's big night on the field, we don't have a lot of time for a big meal. We often have friends and coworkers join us for games, so this is perfect for our pregame festivities...get everyone fueled up before we head to the stadium!

Since I don't want to be left behind doing dishes after cooking a big meal for friends, this 16-inch pizza, cheesy breadsticks, cookies and two liter of Coca-Cola for just $13.98 at Sam's Club is the perfect solution. It's perfect for pregame party fun.

We've always loved Sam's Club's pizza by the slice, so it's a real treat to bring home an entire pizza!

I thought it would be fun to set out coordinating team-colored napkins so our guests can take their cookies on the road...nobody wants to be late to the big game, right?

Guests will always know which house to stop at for their pizza and fun with my hand-painted football door hanging out on the porch! This is such a sweet little way to say "the celebrating starts here!". I had actually never made one of these, but they're fairly simple. They're all the rage here in the south this time of the year!

Start with 1/2" plywood and use a jigsaw to cut a football shape. Then use a 1/4" drill bit to create the hanging holes at the top. If this is a little above your expertise, feel free to order the plain board from an online crafting or handmade site...I found lots of these available for order.

I started by painting my board white. You can barely see it above, but I also applied vinyl that I cut with my machine to the board. (I was using scrap vinyl, so it also happened to be white). Then I went over the vinyl with more white paint to seal the edges so my next color of paint wouldn't bleed through. If you don't have a vinyl machine, grab some precut vinyl letters at the craft store. And feel free to get creative with a "Go Team!" or similar. I just wanted a monogram style (even though, technically, high school letters aren't really a monogram...you get the idea).

After the second coat of white paint dried, I used my football-brown color to go over that (you can see my vinyl popping through in the above photo).

After the brown dried, I peeled off the vinyl revealing the white paint. Then I used a green paint pen to trace my lettering and really make it pop. It was also a nice way to bring in the team colors.

I used my paint can lid to trace the two white ends. I free-handed the laces on top.

As a finishing touch, I lightly sanded the edges to expose the wood.
I added more green paint pen to the other white parts I had just painted.
Then I added ribbon and a bow to hang it.

Such a fun way to ring in football season at our house! You could make this for any team in any colors...from the pee-wee leagues to the pros, the sky is the limit.

  2. That door hanging is adorable, and this post is making me feel homesick! I'm a New Englander living abroad and autumn is of course my favorite season, but now I live in a place where football is played with feet and pizza comes from takeaways whose first talent is kebab :(
