This Horsey Cranberry Sauce will take an ordinary block of cream cheese all the way to holiday appetizer perfection.
It really kicks up the flavor!

I have no idea who invented the cream cheese/jelly-ish appetizer, but she must have had big hair and good taste. I've served anything from jalapeno jelly to raspberry chipotle sauce over cream cheese {and at the holiday time, I do both on one block for the red and green fun}. But, when I ran across this recipe for a cranberry sauce with horseradish in it {in my Christmas with Southern Living 2001 cookbook}, I knew they were speaking my language.
In my cookbook, they even served it over cream cheese...yes! The horseradish adds such a fun element of heat and kick to it. Perfect with the cream cheese. This was so delicious, y'all! Can't wait to serve it this week before our Thanksgiving meal.
1 {15 oz.} can whole-berry cranberry sauce
1/4 cup minced onion
2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt
1/2 cup sugar
1 {8 oz} package of cream cheese
Combine first five ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Stirring continuously, bring to a boil. Reduce and simmer for five minutes. Spoon sauce into a storage container and refrigerate for at least two hours. Can be kept in the refrigerator for up to three days. {I like to make this a couple of days ahead of time to check one thing off my list!}
When ready to serve, place softened cream cheese on a serving platter. Spoon cranberry sauce over the cream cheese. Serve with crackers.

That's a mouthful of holiday right there.

Yum! I think I'll try it...
ReplyDeleteThank you, Kristi! You just gave me the perfect appetizer to take to my daughter's house for Thanksgiving. I'm heading to the store in a bit to buy what I need. Happy Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteOh. My. Word. That looks so good. We Southern girl do love our cream cheese. ;)

LOVE this!! Happy Thanksgiving from "Funkytown" Fort Worth!
ReplyDeleteI'm lovin' this and definitely making it! Thanks so much..Have a Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteI've been making this for years (got it from the same book) and it has become a family favorite. I think my family thinks it's just not the holidays unless I make this recipe!! It's SOOO good and best if the sauce is kept warm and added as needed to the cream cheese.
ReplyDeleteI had to do up a bunch of appetizers for a get together once and poured red pepper jelly over a brick of cream cheese and served with crackers as one of the dishes. I swear everyone there thought it was the most clever thing ever. I should have done two bricks because it was gone faster than all the more complicated dishes I'd made.
