Recycled Wood American Flag + Drill Giveaway

Today, I'm sharing how to make a recycled wood American Flag...

Recycled Wood American Flag | Build this flag in a couple of hours with a fun weathered paint treatment!
I built this Recycled Wood American Flag from the roof of my kids' old playhouse (no worries...they were fully aware of my intentions!). It went together quickly and was a fun little project. I've got the full tutorial (including paint details) below.

This awesome new Black+Decker 20V MAX* lightweight, cordless drill made this project a breeze.

BONUS: I'm giving one away to a reader at the end of the post!!

As I mentioned above, this recycled wood American Flag was made from the roof of my kids' old playscape. We loved this sweet set, but a hail storm tore it up a couple of years ago, and we ended up dismantling it shortly after. We kept the two roof sections...I really wanted to make something with them. Two years later...I finally did! ;)

I pulled apart the roofing boards with the backwards setting on the Black+Decker drill. I love how lightweight this drill is. Made this job super fast. I didn't want the roofing-look overlap, which is why I took this apart to rebuild it flat.

Pieces taken apart and ready to go back together...just slightly differently.
I ended up only using six of the eight boards for the flag.
I also recycled the 2-2x4s as well as all of the screws.

I cut the 2x4s since I used a couple of less boards.

I laid the boards back on the shorter 2x4s. I didn't use all of the same holes...I wanted the flag to look very weathered and barnwood-ish. Leaving a few holes empty helped with that.

I used the same old screws and drilled the boards (this time flat) into the 2x4s at each end. Again, the work was lickety split with this new Black+Decker drill.

I started painting the piece all over with white chalk paint. I used vinyl stars and painted over them with the same white...to seal them since these boards were so bumpy.

Once the white was dried, I did a simple blue milk paint over the star area.
I did tape the off the blue section to make it easier.

I did every other board with red milk paint.

Then I sanded the entire piece to age it a bit.

Then I used dark wax to deepen the aging.

I used natural-colored wax to pull the darker wax off in some areas to make the aging seem more natural.

The waxes also seal the piece, so it doesn't wear too much outdoors.

  1. Before I went to the website, I was going to say the added power was what I liked most (arrr, arrr, arrr). But once I saw how much smaller it was, I have to go with the size. Have had many times where my B&D just didn't fit in the gap.

  9. Oh my! I love the whole thing bc I need a new drill badly! But as minimal as it sounds, the LED light is an awesome feature! Just got a new "well" drip coffee pot and it has one so we don't over fill. Love it!

  10. I have to say that the feature of the 11 position clutch to help prevent stripping screws or damaging material would be my favorite. Although getting into smaller spaces would also be great. I love your flag project!

  12. My favorite feature is that it is cordless. I get tangled up in the cord and it limits my movement, so this is a great feature.

  40. I love that it is light weight, power tools always get so heavy in my hand that I have to take 'breaks' at inopportune time!

  41. I like the compact size and weight of the drill/driver. Plus only need to store one tool!! Maybe I can finally get rid of the corded drill I inherited, circa 1980!

  51. I like that it's lightweight - so many drills are heavy.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I definitely like the clutch preventing stripping. I strip at least one screw with every project! The drill also is so much lighter, with a grip that smaller hands and fingers can more easily wrap around. I have ligament laxity in both thumbs, so rely on my fingers more for grip strength. I also like the attachment feature for the other pieces. The flag idea turned out wonderfully!

  53. As I have problems holding heavy drills, I say the size and weight. I have a bad wrist and this would perfect for me..

  54. I Love, love, love your Flag! I Love how the 20 volt Black and Decker drill is only 2.5 lbs! I hate the heaviness of so many other drills. This would be perfect for me and I could create so many projects without getting hand fatigue!
