Today, I'm sharing how to make a recycled wood American Flag...
plus I'm giving away a brand new Cordless 20 Volt MAX Lithium Drill/Driver from Black+Decker.
This awesome new Black+Decker 20V MAX* lightweight, cordless drill made this project a breeze.
BONUS: I'm giving one away to a reader at the end of the post!!
As I mentioned above, this recycled wood American Flag was made from the roof of my kids' old playscape. We loved this sweet set, but a hail storm tore it up a couple of years ago, and we ended up dismantling it shortly after. We kept the two roof sections...I really wanted to make something with them. Two years later...I finally did! ;)
I pulled apart the roofing boards with the backwards setting on the Black+Decker drill. I love how lightweight this drill is. Made this job super fast. I didn't want the roofing-look overlap, which is why I took this apart to rebuild it flat.
Pieces taken apart and ready to go back together...just slightly differently.
I ended up only using six of the eight boards for the flag.
I also recycled the 2-2x4s as well as all of the screws.
I cut the 2x4s since I used a couple of less boards.
I used the same old screws and drilled the boards (this time flat) into the 2x4s at each end. Again, the work was lickety split with this new Black+Decker drill.
I started painting the piece all over with white chalk paint. I used vinyl stars and painted over them with the same white...to seal them since these boards were so bumpy.
Once the white was dried, I did a simple blue milk paint over the star area.
I did tape the off the blue section to make it easier.
I did every other board with red milk paint.
Then I sanded the entire piece to age it a bit.
Then I used dark wax to deepen the aging.
The waxes also seal the piece, so it doesn't wear too much outdoors.
~GIVEAWAY OVER~
Happy Red, White, and Blue Season!
Before I went to the website, I was going to say the added power was what I liked most (arrr, arrr, arrr). But once I saw how much smaller it was, I have to go with the size. Have had many times where my B&D just didn't fit in the gap.
ReplyDeleteLove this project and I'll bet that your neighbors are going to give you a ton of compliments on it.
ReplyDeleteThe compact size & light weight makes a great combo !!
ReplyDeletelightweight! I find lots of tools are not female friendly because they are too large and heavy.
ReplyDeleteI like that they've made it lighter, makes it less intimidating for those of us that don't use one regularly.
ReplyDeleteLove the size and that its cordless! Love your flag project too!
ReplyDeleteI love that it is small and lighter. I have arthritis in my hands and this would make it so much more comfortable for me to use

ReplyDeleteOh my! I love the whole thing bc I need a new drill badly! But as minimal as it sounds, the LED light is an awesome feature! Just got a new "well" drip coffee pot and it has one so we don't over fill. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI have to say that the feature of the 11 position clutch to help prevent stripping screws or damaging material would be my favorite. Although getting into smaller spaces would also be great. I love your flag project!

ReplyDeleteThat it is light!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite feature is that it is cordless. I get tangled up in the cord and it limits my movement, so this is a great feature.
ReplyDeleteLove the compact size and light feature to make projects easier!
ReplyDeleteBesides the lighter weight I like the idea of a light to see the screws or the holes.
ReplyDeleteI love that it's only 2.5 lbs!! That would really make crafting easier!
ReplyDeleteThe compact size! I have carpel tunnel and heavier things I can't hold without dropping.
ReplyDeleteI like the LED light. There never seems to be enough ambient light when doing projects!
ReplyDeleteI like the new 20V MAX lithium ion battery system. Talk about what a girl needs to be crafty-a battery that will last!

ReplyDeleteWould Love to win this drill, Thank You for the chance.
I Love the idea that the drill is small and light weight. Has an LED light and fits in tight spaces.
This would be so sweet to win as I have fibromyalgia and the drill I have now is so darn heavy.

I like that it is still very powerful but light and compact, more comfortable. I love the added led light feature.
ReplyDeleteThe mid handle design looks like handling would be more balanced. Lightweight and easy to use makes it less intimidating than my husband's big drill :)
ReplyDeleteBeing lightweight after tennis elbow surgery is a must!!
ReplyDeleteI love how the extra pieces ate attached to the drill so you don't have to go looking for them.

ReplyDeleteI need a drill soooo bad. This would be a welcomed gift! Love the size! Love your flag. Great job.
ReplyDeleteWow, this turned out really well. You have really nailed that authentic weathered look! Bec
ReplyDeleteMy favorite feature is that it is cordless. Your flag is great too!
ReplyDeleteThinking of your own ad is never going to be simple. Nonetheless, on the off chance that you know the things that you have to concentrate on, everything will turn into a ton less demanding for you.

I need my own tools. My son has his but I like to have my own. The lightness you stressed would be great. I just love saws and drills. Anything can happen if you have these. Happy wonderful 4th of July.
ReplyDeleteI like the 11 position clutch to help prevent stripping screws or damaging material feature; I would make a few wood frames for a few prints that I need to hang up. Thanks for the chance

I love that it is light weight, power tools always get so heavy in my hand that I have to take 'breaks' at inopportune time!
ReplyDeleteI like the compact size and weight of the drill/driver. Plus only need to store one tool!! Maybe I can finally get rid of the corded drill I inherited, circa 1980!
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of a LED light on the drill! For some reason, my eyeglasses seem to get weaker all the time (vs. my eyes)! Plus, I like the 2-year warranty!
ReplyDeleteI like the more compact size of this drill. The one I have is very heavy and the B&D would definitely be easier to use. I love the way your flag turned out - it has a great vintage look!

love the LED light on the drill i mean you can never have to much light espically working in an attic where the light is way over there i know i did my attic and it was hot couldnt see but i managed to put the ducking in for the exhaust fan and i do have to say it was scary and even after i did i needed somone to tell me it was right and it was i was very proud and to have a light on something that you use it is very helpful
ReplyDeleteI like that the drill is light weight at a mere 2.5 pounds!
ReplyDeleteprettyinhotpink6@gmail dot com
I love how light and portable the drill is!

My favorite feature is the key-less chuck. My current drill requires a key, and that can be a hassle when I set the key down while using it and forget where I put it.
ReplyDeletemy favorite feature is the light weight part. Gets tiring when you're doing a long project!
ReplyDeleteI like that it is cordless and lightweight.
ReplyDeletecbythesea5 at gmail dot com
I like that it is light and that it comes with the led light.
ReplyDeleteI like that it's lightweight - so many drills are heavy.
ReplyDeleteI definitely like the clutch preventing stripping. I strip at least one screw with every project! The drill also is so much lighter, with a grip that smaller hands and fingers can more easily wrap around. I have ligament laxity in both thumbs, so rely on my fingers more for grip strength. I also like the attachment feature for the other pieces. The flag idea turned out wonderfully!
ReplyDeleteAs I have problems holding heavy drills, I say the size and weight. I have a bad wrist and this would perfect for me..
ReplyDeleteI Love, love, love your Flag! I Love how the 20 volt Black and Decker drill is only 2.5 lbs! I hate the heaviness of so many other drills. This would be perfect for me and I could create so many projects without getting hand fatigue!

I married a diesel mechanic, so any and all of our tools are GIANT and heavy and hard for me to use - love that this is lighter!
ReplyDeleteMy husband has a cordless drill but it is way too big and heavy for me to use on my own. I'd love something compact so I could make things on my schedule.

ReplyDeleteDrooling over that flag. My favorite feature it's that it's light enough for me to feel as though I can handle it without being intimidated with the size and weight. If I win, I'm going to try to build the flag.
ReplyDeleteFancy, fancy, fancy!!!! Love this project. The fact that it assists with preventing the stripping of screws and damaging the product is amazing! That is my favorite feature for sure.
ReplyDeleteThat it is cordless is the best! I hate cables all over the place and getting in the way.
ReplyDeleteI love this! I would love for you to join us Sunday-Wednesday's for our Family Joy Blog Link UP Party. Check us out http://thinking-outside-the-pot.com/?cat=433.
ReplyDeleteSuch a cute project! I love that the drill is so lightweight. The drill that I have currently is a little too bulky and heavy for some projects!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of a light and that it's cordless. But the main reason i would like to win this is is because i have misplaced my drill and haven't been able to find it in nine years. Thanks for the chance of winning one.
ReplyDeleteThis cordless drill looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteLove that it's lightweight and cordless!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful project! The compact size of the B&D drill with the same power is definitely the best feature. Easier to hold and fits in tight spaces!
ReplyDeleteI love that it has an LED light and weighs less than 3 pounds!
ReplyDeleteI have thumb issues, and a light weight drill would be very helpful. I love the colors you achieved with your flag! Thanks for the chance to win an excellent tool!

ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea! I've actually been thinking about making something similar to put on my front porch! I love the idea of the wax as a finishing agent to deepen the aging! Thanks for the chance!

I like the fact that the drill is compact and lightweight, so that I will be able to handle it with ease when using it on my own projects around the house.
ReplyDeletei love that light weight
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that the drill is lightweight, as I had hand surgery and a lighter drill would let me try many more projects than I can with a regular drill. I love the light feature, too.
