Brown Sugar Bacon Smokies

These easy appetizers are perfect for a holiday party...
or even for Christmas or New Year's Day brunch.

I feel like this dish was a pioneer in the whole sweet/salty phenomenon. I first had it about ten years ago at a friend's house and was hooked. I remember going home and Googling it with no luck...we're talking pre-Pinterest days, people. Dark ages.

So I called the hostess and {ever so painstakingly} wrote down the recipe. Yep. Pen to paper. Weird, huh?

Amazingly, I still have that same piece of paper {ten years of greasy bacon stains and all}. I still work from it when I make this...although I don't know why. It is only three ingredients.

Brown Sugar Bacon Smokies

But there's something about this combination of sweet and salty. And the brown sugar gives it a really fun texture.

Recipe for Brown Sugar Bacon Smokies

Ingredients

  • 1 package mini “smokies” sausages
  • 1 regular size package bacon
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, packed

Directions:

  • Cut bacon into thirds {easiest to do when still “stuck” together}.
  • Wrap each sausage with a piece of cut bacon, securing with toothpick.
  • Line smokies in glass casserole dish.
  • Sprinkle entire dish with brown sugar.
  • Bake at 350 for 45 minutes. Serve hot out of the oven...although they're still yummy when just warm!

Seriously. Texture-riffic.

    1. Thanks, Dawn! I relinked it...but I think it may have been okay, it looks like it was downloaded a few times already. It requires two clicks...one to open the site that holds my downloads and another on the arrow that says "download". I hope it works for you. Let me know if it doesn't! Have a great new year!

    2. Thanks! When I tried it before I got an error message saying, "Google doesn't recognize ..." or something like that. This time it worked fine!

  4. Is there a dip or recipe for a dip that you could recommend to go with these?

    1. Hi Regina-- I truly think they are better without one. The brown sugar forms a gooey exterior on these, almost like a coating. I'm not sure dipping would truly do anything, but that's just my own opinion.
