Table and Chairs Makeover with Chalk-Style Paint

This post for my Chalk-Style Paint Table and Chairs Makeover
is brought to you by Plaid Crafts.
I was supplied all paint, waxes, brushes, and loads of inspiration for this project.

I've been wanting to make over my kitchen table for eons, y'all. I finally just bit the bullet and I couldn't be any happier. I went all Monica Gellar style and painted my chairs in several colors and the table in another. See how it all came together below.

Whhhhhhy did I wait so long to tackle this project, y'all? It has completely changed this space and made me fall in love with my beat up 14+ year old table all over again. And with Waverly's chalk-style paint, there was minimal prep. That's probably my favorite part. Check out the makeover process below.

This table (not these particular chairs) was one of the first "big" furniture purchases my husband and I made as a young married couple. We drove from our home in Muleshoe, Texas to Lubbock to buy it at Sam's Club. We were so proud of this thing. We came home and had it all set up and had friends over for dinner the very next day. This table saw us through many an evening meal, kids going from high chairs next to it to booster seats at it, to just about every holiday and occasion. It is truly special.
But over the years, the finish on it was not so special. My sweet Benjamin used to tap it with his fork tines as a toddler...and left many an indention all over his spot. It was a bit grimy and the varnish had started peeling years ago. It was past time for a makeover.

And of course, I love me some chalk-style paint. Minimal prep is the only way I know. I love all of the gorgeous colors in the Waverly line of chalk-style paints. For the chairs in my makeover, I used Maize, Fern, Agave, and Crimson. The table is in Pool. I also used Waverly's White Wax to seal, protect and give it a really fun finish.

The chairs are not the original ones that came with the table. I felt like the ones that went with this set were a bit too tall for our breakfast room...especially with the built-in piece in the back of this space. I actually found these chairs on Craigslist...they came with a drop leaf table that I'm in love with. I use it in my craft/studio space. I considered using it in here, but there was no way we could part with our special table and all of its sweet memories. I purchased the Craigslist set about a year ago when we bought this home. We had to leave quite a bit of furniture behind at our old home for staging purposes. We grabbed this table because it was super cheap (and super cute) and used it in the new home while we waited on the old one to sell. The set itself was from the 1950s and is just as vintage-y and fun as you can imagine. I wasn't sure if I'd turn around and resell it once we were able to bring all of our furniture over, or if it was staying put. Turns out, I couldn't part with it. I really love the shape of the chairs...especially the backs of the chairs. They're perfect with the age and style of our home. Using them here instead of the original chairs that went with the table, works out a bit better (height wise).

I gave the table and chairs to be painted a good scrubbing with a cleanser and then got to work.

Again, the Waverly chalk-style paint requires minimal prep. The Waverly chalk and wax brushes were perfect for this project, too. I'm usually a brush snob...these totally converted me, though! I'll be using them for every chalk-style paint project from here on out.

This is what the chairs looked like before sanding and waxing. Aren't they so fun and cheerful? The sanding and wax just softened them a bit and made them fit my decor a bit better.

I think the Agave may be my favorite color. Perfection.
These jars of paint go a long way, too.
I have quite a bit leftover and have BIG plans for all of it!

We gave the chairs and table a good sanding to weather the set a bit...then got to work waxing. The white wax was really fun to work with. I usually use a dark or antique wax...this was a really nice change. The look is totally different, but I really am happy with it. I simply applied the wax in small sections with my wax brush.

Then I worked the wax in with a lint-free cloth. I did this on each chair and the table, as well. I let all of the pieces sit for 24 hours before we put the set together in the breakfast room. This gave the wax plenty of time to cure and set. It gives the paint such a nice, smooth, and soft-to-the-touch finish.

I love the way the white wax just softened everything a bit.

What do you think?
Would you paint your table and chairs in five different colors?

Where are your curtains from? I am contemplating navy gingham like these for my living room but I'm nervous to make the commitment.

  4. I never follow the "trends". I decorate my house with what I like which tends to be yard sale, thrift store mixed with some new stuff. We have even been known to pick stuff off the side of the road! Somehow we manage to pull it all together and get quite lot of compliments. Do what you love and you will love your home. It will be unique to you.
