DIY Custom-Sized Faux Canvas

Creating a Faux Canvas for an awkwardly spaced area {or to save some major buckos} is super easy. While this isn't a true canvas at all...it gives the look of one with its dimension and style.

What inspired this creation was the most awkward and annoying spot in my kitchen:
1. Hello, Mr. Phone Jack. No, we aren't land line people, so we're going to have to figure out another way to deal with your clinical ugliness.
2. First try was a no-go. While I liked this simple HobLob find, the graphic designer in me {who used to work on newspaper layouts} kept calling the area under the sign "trapped white space". That's what it would be in the graphic design world. And it drove me BONKERS.
3. My solution was to build my own "faux canvas" and display my Family Rules on it. {Check out my give away on how you can win your own custom family rules design.}

I started out by putting together a {very} simple frame to match the dimensions of my awkward spot. Y'all, I didn't even miter the corners...although you certainly could for a much "cleaner" look. I attached my frame together with flat L brackets. I also purchased a piece of black foam core. You can use any color you want...I just knew I'd be painting my frame black and wanted it to appear seamless.

I cute my foam core to match the shape of the frame. I used short screws with large heads and drilled the foam core to the frame. I would also advise using {any kind of} glue as well. It's difficult to make sure you don't drill right through your foam core {it is foam}, so glue is a nice added measure.

Then I painted the frame black.

I had already designed my art to the size of the frame...I did have to print it on two pages to piece it together, but that wasn't a big deal. I did trim it...it comes with a slight border from the print shop.

Next, I rolled on my Mod Podge in a thin layer.

I used the weight of my bottle to work out all the bubbles after laying the art onto the Mod Podged foam board frame.

I then Mod Podged on top of the art. Twice. This looks pretty messy, but it dries clear.

And that's all there was to it.

I used scrap wood for my frame. The only cost was the print outs and foam core {I had the paint on hand}. Hope you can try a similar piece in your awkward space!
