If you're a crafter, you know it's never too early to start making your handmade Christmas ornaments. Today, I'm sharing a really sweet Handmade Jute Christmas Ornament that has a fun, vintage vibe. AND, this is a BIG month-long series that I've joined with 30 other blogging friends. There are LOADS of handmade Christmas ornament ideas for you in this post.
I had a hard time naming this ornament, y'all. It's technically made from upholstery webbing ribbon and felt...but that was a mouthful. Upholstery webbing is really just a bit of fancier jute ribbon, so that's what we're going with here. And you can really use any type of heavy woven ribbon here...burlap would even be cute. But, this jute upholstery webbing ribbon is so sturdy and holds up so well, that it's a great material for a handmade Christmas ornament. See the full tutorial below.
As I mentioned above, this handmade Christmas ornament of mine is a part of a BIG series all month long (we're on day #18). Be sure to visit all of the bloggers participating in this amazing hop at the end of the post. A big thank you to those sweet friends who took the time to organize this incredible series chocked full of so many Christmas ideas for our trees.
I probably tossed around a dozen ornament ideas before settling on this one. I like dual purpose crafts and I think this can double as a banner when several are strung together...would even be a cute tree garland if you're patient enough to make that many (this girl sadly is not). But the ones I did make really make me happy. I love that fun, vintage vibe these have...almost grain sack-y in nature. And the sewing parts are totally optional. If you prefer not to sew, a good fabric glue can go a long way on this one.
My inspiration for this handmade Christmas ornament? This beast of a roll of upholstery ribbon. I have it to redo my Queen Anne chair that has seen its day...but I just flat out haven't had the time. So, I'm slowly using this for other items while I wait on my big upholstery block of time to present itself. This is some really hardy stuff...fantastic for crafting with.

Below are the supplies I used for this ornament (click on the names to grab the items on Amazon):
- jute-colored thread for sewing machine (not pictured)
- fabric glue (for use if not sewing)
You will start by cutting your jute into a 9" strip. You can cut the decorative triangle out of the bottom, if you like. I folded the piece in half and pressed it lightly to get a nice crease to see the midpoint while I worked on the ornament.
I freehand cut the little Christmas trees out of the green felt (if you look closely, the trunks aren't perfectly centered!). I just kind of eyeballed them. I cut one out, then traced it onto the felt to get the other the same size. Since the felt I used was adhesive-backed, I stuck them onto the jute on each side (make sure they're not too close to the midpoint line, so you have room to put your dowel in). I did one on each side so the ornament would be double sided.
I used my embroidery floss to do a simple blanket stitch around the trees. I thought it gave it a nice, finished look. But, if you're not into this, totally skip it.
I love how cute the red blanket stitch is against the green felt trees.
Fold the jute in half. I used my Wonder Clips to make sure my folded ornament didn't shift while I was on the sewing machine working on it. You can pin, if you prefer. Sewing just gives the ornament a nice structure and keeps everything in place.
If you're not going to sew this, you can fold the jute in half, tuck in the craft dowel on top, and then glue it closed on the inside edges.
I used my heavy-duty needle on my machine since the upholstery jute is so thick. I also used my zipper foot. Confession: I use my zipper foot way more than I should...I just love the shape of the foot and how it is a clearer guide for me than my regular foot. Leaving the Wonder Clips in place made me remember to leave the space at the top for the dowel to slide in place.
I sewed a basic stitch around the perimeter of the jute ornament, leaving a half an inch at the top, so I can slide the wooden dowel into the top of the ornament. I sewed 1/4" from the edges on the rest of the sides.
It's hard to see, but if you look closely, you'll see the stitch around the perimeter (but a half an inch for the top for the dowel).
Slide the dowel into place.
I cut an 8" piece of the Baker's Twine for the hanging piece.
Just knot it on both sides of the dowel.
I did a backstitch one, too (instead of the blanket stitch). However, the felt kind of made that stitch look messier than I prefer. The blanket stitch worked out much better for this.
I can't wait to see how they look all over my tree! I plan to make a few more so they'll be enough to catch the eye.

ReplyDeleteGenuine urgent love spell on how to get ex back, stop your husband from divorce and fix your broken marriage.. i have been married for seven years, on a very beautiful day like any other, my husband told me that he doesn’t feel loved anymore that he wants a divorce, i was devastated, broken i begged him to listen to me that we can work it out like we always do, but he didn’t listen, he told me that he met someone that loves and understands him, i begged him to consider our kids but he’s did listen.
ReplyDeletehe left and i was frustrated, i began searching for help and answers, then i heard about a man that can Cast a spell to remind him of all the things we have been through together, at first I was scared then i decided to give it a try, and like magic my husband came back, apology and begging for forgiveness, thanks to this man, I’m posting this to help people with similar issues.

You are a genius, using that jute as the base layer for your ornament. It's gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThese are adorable and the upholstery webbing is perfect for Christmas!
ReplyDeleteI attempted to make one of these the other day using some thick floral wire from the dollar store. Let me tell you that you definitely need to use a wire hanger the floral wire didn't hold a round shape so I ended up using it as a swag on my fire place. Still cute as a swag though! Thanks!
