Homemade Dog Biscuits

These Homemade Dog Biscuits will make your pup super happy!
They're a bit messy, but only four ingredients...and a great clean up solution.

Have you ever baked your own homemade dog biscuits? They're really easy, healthy, and super budget friendly. Check out my simple four-ingredient recipe below. Your furry friend will thank you.

I've introduced our Chloe on here before. She's our rescue-dog that we've had for a year and a half. She's a Standard Dachshund and tends to carry a bit of extra weight (ironically, she came to us that way...our neighbors had the hardest time believing she was a rescue dog). At her last check up in May, this puppers had to hear the "D" word. The vet put her on a diet, y'all. We now buy her a light adult formula food and her eating schedule is super strict (none of this grazing business that she was used to). She was only able to have a very specific type of treat...that cost $18 a box (for like 10 tiny treats)...yowza. I talked to my vet about making our own and she thought that was a great idea...especially with the recipe I showed her.

I now love making these...I know exactly what goes into them (no fillers or additives). They also make a bunch when made with the smaller, standard dog-treat size cookie cutter. I can usually get about five dozen out of the recipe. And the recipe has simple ingredients (flour, oats, peanut butter, and water). Roughly estimated, it costs less than a dollar to make an entire batch.

Before you start, you'll want to grab a roll of Bounty Paper Towels. These are kind of messy...but definitely worth it! Not only is Bounty great for cleaning up doggie kitchen messes, but they can help get rid of pet mess of any magnitude (know what I mean...wink?!).

Just four ingredients: wheat flour, peanut butter, oats, and hot water. I also ordered some fun dog bone cookie cutters here. I mainly used the second to smallest size to cut out treats for Chloe. We also have a 13-year-old lab, too. She gets the big size cutter for her treats...just don't tell Chloe, k? Not all of us are on diets around here...although most of the time it sure feels like it.

You'll mix the two dry ingredients (the flour and oats), then form a well in the middle for the hot water and peanut butter.

After completely mixing the ingredients into a ball of dough, turn it out onto a floured surface.

Roll out until the thickness is about 1/2" all across.

Using your cutter, start making bones! ;) I'm able to ball up and re-flatten the dough several times to get loads of little treats out of this recipe.

The aftermath.

Homemade Dog Biscuits

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats (not instant)
  • 1 1/4 cup hot water
  • 1/3 cup creamy peanut butter
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Combine flour and oats in large bowl and mix. Make a well in the middle of the mixture and add hot water and peanut butter. Mix until mixture forms a ball of dough.
Turn dough out onto a floured surface. Roll out into a circle, with dough being about 1/2" thick. Cut out with cutters.

Place cut out treats on a cookie sheet sprayed with non-stick spray. You can place them fairly close together since they do not spread during baking. Bake for 30 minutes for crispy treats (a little less for softer ones).

Let cool completely. Store in airtight container. Freeze after two days (I end up freezing most of mine since the recipe makes so many).

A simple spritz of cleaner and a few wipes of my Bounty towels makes it all clean again.

These are fun to give as gifts to other dog-owners, too.

Even if she gets off of her vet-regulated diet, we'll definitely still be making these homemade dog treats for Chloe. She loves them!

They smell super yummy and nutty, too!

  4. What a fun & simple recipe. One suggestion, make sure the peanut butter you use DOES NOT contain Xylitol. Xylitol is toxic to dogs & some PB makers are now using it as a sweetener.

  6. We are expecting a dogie delivery at our house soon so this is very timely. I'm pinning for later use. When we had a dog before the treats were expensive and, like you, I always wondered what went in them. Thanks for sharing. Visiting from Lou Lou Girls.

  13. I found this on Pintrest, and my dog loves oatmeal so I know he will love these treats. I'm going to be making them today. I will try to give you a short version of how the dog became my dog. I met my husband in 2010, his grown son had the dog a puppy then. The boy moved to FL and couldn't take the dog. I married my husband in 2012. The dog was always kept outside. I'm a dog lover. I started letting him in when my husband was at work...lol. He is now my dog and stays inside. I spoil him a little. Okay maybe a lot. My husband says his dog ran away, because he is now my dog.
