Preteen Boy's Room

This Preteen Boy's Room Makeover post is sponsored by Dorel Home Products
All opinions and ideas are my own. #SignatureSleepGold #BelieveInSleep

Our older son's room is finally done. He's right on the brink of teenagerhood (two months shy, actually), and he was ready for something a bit more grown up than the bedroom he had in our previous home. Check out all of the fun details (and his fabulous new mattress...that arrived in a box!) below.

It's hard to believe we're about to have a teenager on our hands. And while that trait seems so grown up, in a way, we're kind of in that weird in-between stage. He's grown up...but yet, still enjoys a few toys and childhood things. And I'm super okay with that. Organizing a room for this stage can be tricky, but I'm hoping we have a preteen boy's room that he can live with (and love) for a few years.

In our previous home, Benjamin had a twin bed (that had once been part of a bunk bed set...but then that was deemed too childish). When we moved last year, we knew it was time for an upgrade (he's as tall as I am, y'all...weird). Full size bed, we're ready for ya. Good thing I had a fantastic antique headboard and footboard I picked up last spring that was just crying for this transition.

We went with a full sized Signature Sleep Gold Mattress from Dorel Home Products that's available at Walmart. You can check them out HERE. The best thing about this mattress? It's delivered to your doorstep in a box...a box that will have you wondering, "How on earth did they fit a mattress in there?"

Last January, I found myself spending a lot of time with my brothers as my dad was in the hospital. My brother, Mike, was telling me about his new "mattress in a box" that was apparently life-changing. I had never heard of such a thing and couldn't quite wrap my brain around it. Flash forward a few months and here we are unboxing our own.

We pulled it out and unrolled it. It is compressed within the box and can take up to 48 hours to expand to its full height. The initial expansion happens almost immediately. It was really cool to watch the process.

Here's the other cool thing...this mattress is better for the environment and our air quality than others. It's made without formaldehyde and without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. And it has low VOC emissions for indoor air quality. It's also made without mercury, lead, or other heavy metals, as well as ozone depleters.

I also love how budget-friendly this thing is! It's comfortable and affordable. And you can't beat the ship-to-the-door...although, if you'd prefer, you can pick it up at your Walmart.

And, it looks great! And, according to my son, feels great to sleep on.
He's loving this Signature Sleep Gold Mattress.

The 8" depth makes his sheets fit perfectly, too. We were dealing with some sheet struggles with his previous mattress...they never stayed on the corners well at all. In the cooler months, we also put a white down comforter on his bed. But, since we're in Texas and it's scorching hot right now, his lightweight blue quilted coverlet is all he needs or wants.

I think he's really proud of the new space.

Doesn't my vintage bed look great, too? Ha!
I think I'm the only one who really cares about it in this house.
I did clear coat spray it so we wouldn't have rust everywhere.

When we bought this house, Benjamin wanted this room right away. And truthfully, he has the best view in the house. Out of the front windows, he looks into a grouping of 100 year-old oak trees across the lawn. The side window is into our side yard...also full of old trees.

I posted his little reading corner a while back. If I'm being completely honest, it's like 30% for reading, 70% video games and iPod time.

And, of course, I did the thing I said I'd never do...he has a tv in here. It's actually only hooked up to the gaming console, so he it's not on all that much. Don't be jealous of our 1970s intercom speaker system going through the house, now. ;)

This is about 20% of the Legos he had in here...he's starting to pare them down a bit (sniff, sniff).

We also made some shelves to house his finished pieces.

He had a map in his previous room, too. This is a different one that fits the space better.

Again, be sure to check out that Signature Sleep Gold Mattress HERE at Walmart.
It's a wonderful addition to this space and his lifestyle.

  2. I like the color combinations that you are using in this room. My boys all share a room, and a combo of colors like this would be something that would make them all happy. I like the map behind the bed!

  5. I love the way this room turned out, though I'm not ready to think of my little boy ever being big enough for a big kid room! I love the map-- it reminds me of the ones they had in school when I was a kid. I'm going to have to look in to the mattress, since we are in dire need of a new one, but so many of them contain nasty chemicals.

  6. You did a good job decorating his room! I love the bright colors you used for the pillows and bed covers. The mattress looks really comfy too. He is going to have lots of fun times and with a room that nice, I guess you won't have a hard time telling him to clean his room. Love the triple layer tray to keep those Lego pieces off the floor.

  7. Every single thing is amazing, down to the smallest detail. I think your son will adore this room for years to come. I love what you did with the bed and the theme of the room. It's nice that you found a great mattress too! I can't believe it came in a box like that! Amazing!

  10. No preteen boys here, but there is a married couple that desperately needs a new mattress. I've been seeing the mattress in a box here and there. At first I was concerned that rolling it up might weaken it somehow but now I am convinced it's the one I want.

  11. This is how non-box mattresses are commonly sold in Denmark. They don't have boxsprings, so you either have a box mattress, which is sort of like a 2-in-1 solution, or you just have a mattress that generally is delivered rolled up and super-compressed. I couldn't believe it! The first time I bought a mattress, I thought they'd made a mistake.
