Thrifted Craft Room Storage

Today, I'm sharing some ideas for thrifted craft room storage. Although, I shared the big reveal for my craft room wall last month here, I thought it would be fun to share all of the tidbits I've added since then...including several items from thrift stores (this room is on a budget, y'all). I'm also sharing how I gave one of my items a little makeover.

AND, this is the first 2017 edition of the Thrifty Style Team!

This ribbon and tulle craft room storage container is one of my latest thrift store finds (see them all throughout this post). My rule is that each thrifted container I buy can't cost more than $5...and it must fit that vintage vibe I've got going on in here. Check out how I made this one over from a holiday planter I found at Goodwill (below).

And yay...the Thrifty Style Team is back, y'all! I'm loving all of the fantastic and creative ideas all of my friends are sharing today, too. They're all listed at the bottom of this post. But, first, I'm sharing some thrifted craft room storage.

I showed you this post last month in my craft room reveal, but I've already been tweaking (I just can't leave well enough alone, really). Plus, I am starting to get in my groove with how I use this space and certain things just needed to move here and there.

To be completely up front, this project was born out of my "what on earth am I going to create for my Thrifty Style Team post this month?" challenge. I had kind of put off my project for a bit, and then it was down to the wire. I'm still rearranging in here a lot (the back wall is still very much a work in progress...and makes me want to cry when I try to tackle it). But, this room has been done on a tight budget. It was an unexpected house project and we hadn't planned it out like our other spaces...you know, until the moment I was all "let's make the piano room my craft room". So, I kind of wanted to prove to *someone* that I really could do it on the cheap (unlike all of those other theoretical times I tried that scenario). Thrifting to the rescue. And I knew right away my project for this month's team post just had to be for the craft room (since that's where all of my attention seems to go lately).

I found this bucket at my Goodwill for $2.99. It was with the holiday clearance stuff (apparently they wanted more than $2.99 originally...can't imagine how it made it to clearance, ahem). I'm assuming this was a planter for someone's poinsettia in its previous life. And I definitely wasn't the first person to take a paintbrush to it (the previous painter left me the drip marks to prove it). But, I liked its barrel shape so it went home with me.

This was a quickie makeover. As in, I did it yesterday.

I added vinyl lettering to the outside of the planter (I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut mine, but you can grab simple-style vinyl lettering here and at craft stores). I also used my favorite weathering tool all over the red surface...my wax puck. Sadly, I don't think Miss Mustard Seed has them on Amazon anymore, but I have seen them over on Etsy. You can use the side of a taper candle for the same effect. The wax creates a barrier that makes the outer layer of paint easier to weather.

I covered the entire piece in chalk-style paint (in a caramel-ish color called Hazelnut from Waverly).

Then I removed the vinyl, did a lot of sanding with medium grit paper to allow that red to show through, and finished it off with a dark wax. The dark wax just deepens the aged look of the piece. It's not for everyone, but it's my style. I like pieces to look old and dirty.

I purposefully overaged the label here. I don't have a lot of labeling in this room...kind of weird since it's a craft space that has a lot of storage elements involved. But, I wanted a really organic, vintage feel to it. So, the label needed to blend in for me.

The fact that I design organizational labels for a living is not lost on me. My life is basically one big oxymoron.

Ha! That white ribbon with the black edge is even thrifted (I'm hardcore, man). It was $.49 at the Salvation Army and the blue line on its price tag meant it was half off. And it's some fancy ribbon, y'all. Boom

Some of my other thrifted craft room storage pieces include my enamel wash basin that holds my yarn (a crocheter I am not, obviously...but I do use yarn from time to time).

Another favorite thrifty find was my spool holder I put on my peg rack. It was just $2.50!
They do sell these here on Amazon, too (just not for $2.50...womp, womp).

I also like to use vintage office baskets in this space, too. I've had these for a few years, but they're truly fantastic. I wish I had ten more. I find them from time to time at thrift stores, but they're kind of hard to come by. This one on my sewing table holds fabric for upcoming projects. The one on my computer desk has my printables that I've printed out and are ready to photograph.

What'cha think? Is thrifted craft room storage your style, too?

  1. Well geeze, the whole room is cute for sure, but I'm loving that little tulle bin. I see that sort of thing often at thrift stores, so you can bet I'll be picking one up the next time. I love it so much I pinned it!
