We love gifting wine around the holidays...it's such an enjoyable gift for so many of our friends and family. I thought it would be fun to create a unique way to wrap our wine bottles this year...and a kitchen towel was the perfect fit! Check out my tutorial (along with the free printable wine tags) below.

Seriously...who wouldn't want to receive a fun wrapped up bottle of wine this season? I made these DIY Kitchen Towel Wine Bags for larger bottles of wine, but they can easily be adapted for a standard sized bottle, as well. But...hey, gifting a BIG bottle will put you a little higher up on the nice list, right?

I grabbed a few bottles of Sutter Homes Family Vineyards for my gifting this year...the larger size is fabulous. I grabbed the Sutter Home White Zinfandel, Sutter Home Moscato, and Sutter Home Chardonnay (my personal fave!).

This is the perfect wine to bring folks together during the holidays. Besides gift giving...Sutter Homes Family Vineyards is perfect for a wine tasting with friends, wine and food pairings, and even just spending time with family around the fireplace. They have a great variety of flavors for your holiday celebrations. Sutter Home Family Vineyards is a family-owned company for three generations and have won over 350 gold medals for their wines since 2004.

They have a 65 year history of providing quality and affordable wines from California. Even new wine users can have confidence that every bottle from Sutter Homes Family Vineyards will deliver consistent quality and value.

To make these DIY Kitchen Towel Wine Bags, grab the following supplies:
  • holiday print kitchen towels
  • straight pins
  • thread for sewing (your thread color won't matter too much since all of your seams will be interior ones)
  • straight pins
  • measuring tape
  • (not pictured) sewing machine

Measure the circumference of the largest part of your bottle. My bottles measured 12.5 inches around...I added an inch and a half for seam allowance (and wiggle room to shimmy the bag onto the bottle). So, my bag needed a circumference of 14 inches. Kitchen towels are PERFECT for this...you can actually get two per bag. Folding them in half, the height is just right for a wine bottle (and then your top seams are already done for you). I didn't do a fancy bottom to my bag...I wanted these to be simple (after all, they're gift wrap, right?).

I folded my towel in half and cut a 7" piece while it was folded in half (the two 7" parts, when folded together and sewn will equal the 14" I want). I didn't use the finished sides of the towel...I cut those off. If you purchase towels with vertical lines, like I did, these will be even easier to cut. Keeping the towel folded in half (inside out), I pinned each of the sides. Again, no need to worry about the height since a towel is already the perfect length for this and your tops are done!

Do a simple basic stitch up the two cut edges. I did about a half inch of backstitching at the top and bottom to keep my stitch from unraveling.

Turn your bag right side out and it's good to go!

Then just slip your wine bottle inside of the bag. The bottle won't be completely covered at the neck...but I like the look of it peeking out (plus, it's the perfect way to carry it).

I used some fun and festive pom pom trim from the craft store for my tie around the top of the bag. Then dressed the bag up with one of my punny free printable wine gift tags. You can write your "to" and "from" on the backside of your tags.

These work best when printed on to card stock paper.

I'm not sure who wouldn't be delighted to find a cute bag of delicious wine under the tree.

  5. I am seriously in love with this gift idea! I'm a known procrastinator, which sometimes tends to get me into trouble. This gift idea could come together quickly and would be loved -- but it has the touch of homemade added to it.

  6. This is a nice little craft to do for the holidays. I haven't used a sewing machine since Home Ec in high school. I was I was more skilled in it – there are so many things you can do.

  9. I loved the wine bottle bags, and I especially liked the Christmas kitchen towels you used. I searched the internet to find some exactly like them, but to no avail. Could you please tell me when you purchased these great Christmas towels? Thank you! Valerie Fedder

    1. Thank you so much, Valerie. I actually grabbed them at our local Ross Dress for Less (if you don't have one...it's like a TJ Maxx or Marshall's). They were sold in a three pack. I went back the next day because I loved these patterns so much and they were already gone. :( Sorry I'm not much more help!!
