How to Create Vacuum Lines Like the Professionals

Have you ever wondered how to create vacuum lines like the professionals? Or like your mom used to? Below is a simple tutorial to help you make your carpet look like perfection.

While the name of my blog makes it pretty obvious that floor care perfection is somewhat questionable around these parts...I can tell you that I do love a good patterned vacuum effect. Seeing those straight and diagonal lines kind of makes my heart go pitter patter, y'all. Gosh, I can almost hear my mom saying: "You better not walk on those carpets and mess up my fresh pattern!" Ahhh, the sweet sounds of my childhood...

Check out how easy it is to create these patterns in your own carpet. It will look just like you had the professionals swing by.

I have to say, a cordless vacuum is fantastic for pattern vacuuming. I used to have to do gymnastics going back and forth over a cord...and to keep the weight of a cord from interfering with the pattern I was creating. My new Hoover AIR™ Cordless 2-in-1 Vacuum is really great for this, and so much more. Even though this is considered a part of the stick vacuum family, it is fabulous for a quick run-over on my carpets.

Not going to lie, we re-carpeted the bedrooms this summer. After that little "investment", I've become obsessive about keeping these babies uber clean. These new carpets also look great with that fresh vacuum pattern in them.

How to Create Vacuum Lines Like the Professionals:

  • Begin at the farthest corner of your room (from the door) and pull the vacuum straight back toward you in one stroke in a perfect line (using the wall/baseboard as a guide). Your "lines" will be about 3-4 feet long each.
  • Diagonally push the vacuum back to the "starting line", overlapping your first stroke by about two inches.
  • Move to the side so you don't accidentally step in your stroke pattern (and always vacuum in socks so you don't create a shoe print).
  • Pull the vacuum straight back toward you again and repeat the pattern across the entire room.
  • You will create another row "below" your first one, overlapping by a few inches.
  • Repeat these rows until you have vacuumed yourself out of the room.

Is this something you already do? I had a reader recently ask me what pattern vacuuming was after I mentioned it in a post. I thought it would be fun to share this technique. To some, it may seem a bit antiquated, but I really love the result. To me, it's kind of cathartic to create these patterns. Plus, it gives the impression of order, visually.

This Hoover AIR™ Cordless 2-in-1 Vacuum truly is awesome to work with on these patterns. My older vacuum is so heavy and is such a burden to use like this. And no, mom...those are not pajama pants. ;)

I also love that it has a detachable hand held vacuum that I can make quick work of my baseboards with. Hoover has a line of 4 cordless cleaners—3 vacuums and a hard floor wet cleaner (on my Christmas list...because it sounds like something this anti-mopper needs, right?!).
Windtunnel 3 technology provides performance and suction power to lift and remove dirt. This is a no-nonsense machine, y'all.

Rechargeable lithium battery, y'all. Bada bing, bada boom. No cord = liberating vacuum experiences. For real. The entire Hoover cordless line is powered by this interchangeable battery system that works with all products in the Hoover cordless line. LithiumLife batteries have double the capacity of standard 18-volt lithium Ion batteries, which means longer runtime and fade-free power (read: my kids' chores will never have the "low battery" excuse.)

The Hoover AIR™ Cordless 2-in-1 Vacuum is even more awesomesauce on my hard floors. I can even let my kids use it since it's so lightweight (ummm, can you tell I've had my old vacuum for almost ten years? This whole lightweight thing is such a new concept to me).

I do save this special touch for when company comes, but it's still a treat to see it in carpet.
Do you use a pattern when you vacuum?

  3. No, I don't see patterns after I vacuum--I'm happy if I don't see more cat hair!! This does sound like a great vacuum and I do need a new one with a LOT of power to pull up those cat hairs. I will check this one out,

  7. I'd forgotten that vaccum lines were a thing. When I was growing up, we had rooms that couldn't be stepped in to spoil the pretty lines. I remember tip toeing around the edges. As an adult, my carpet is too far gone to show lines and I've got other things to get excited about. (If I had new carpet, I'm sure I might make lines, though.)
