Homemade Instant Oatmeal Packets

These Homemade Instant Oatmeal Packets make
busy school mornings easy, tasty and healthy!

As we get close to the start of school, I'm starting to put together simple breakfast ideas that are simple for the rush that comes with those mornings. These Homemade Instant Oatmeal Packets are budget-friendly and healthy, too {no chemicals or preservatives}! And there's matching free printables with directions below, too.

My kids always cringe when I make homemade oatmeal...it's not the "good" stuff, in their opinion. In an effort to get away from a lot of chemically-rich foods, but still make my kids really want to eat breakfast, I created a homemade version of instant oatmeal packets. They're fun to customize to each kid's tastes and I know exactly what's in each bowl!

I found several recipes out there, including this yummy one at Andrea Dekker, but I ended up kind of fiddling around and creating our own. You can really customize these packets any way you want to>>>

To create 20 packets, you'll need>>>

Ingredients>>>
- 10 cups instant oats
- 2/3 cup milk powder
- 1 cup dark brown sugar {that's preference, feel free to use light}
- 1/4 cup cinnamon
- 1 cup pecans {optional}

Add ins {for after the oatmeal is cooked}>>>
- chocolate or white chocolate chips
- dried cranberries or raisins
- honey or agave syrup

Mix the main ingredients together in a large bowl. Pour 1/2 cup of mixture into resealable bags.

To prepare>>>
On the stovetop>>> Heat 3/4 - 1 cup milk in small saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Add oatmeal packet and cook for one minute, or until oatmeal begins to thicken. Pour into bowl and top with add-ins of your choice.
In the microwave>>> Pour oatmeal packet into microwave safe bowl. Add 3/4 - 1 cup milk to bowl and stir. Heat 1 minute on high. Top with add-ins of your choice.

These were really simple to put together. My kids can even prepare the microwave version on their own {which they've done a few times this summer...because they're not sleep laters! They're 6 A.M.ers...year-round!}.

Do you have any favorite busy morning breakfasts?

Here's a couple more of mine>>>

  1. My kids have always thought the instant oatmeal packets were better than the big container of oatmeal. What a genius way to trick them. :) Pinned and shared!

  3. Can these be made with water instead of milk? It would be easier not to bring milk into work. Thanks!

  5. Kristi, I love this! I make oatmeal all the time for my family and never know what to add to it to make it really sparkle. Dried cranberries are a great idea. This would make a great gift.
