Horsey Cranberry Sauce {The PERFECT Holiday Appetizer}

This Horsey Cranberry Sauce will take an ordinary block of cream cheese all the way to holiday appetizer perfection.  It really kicks up the flavor!

In Texas, we can pretty much take any block of cream cheese, pour something jelly-ish on it and have a crazy good appetizer in minutes {sounds weird. Trust me it's so not. At least not around these parts.}

Horsey Cranberry Sauce

I have no idea who invented the cream cheese/jelly-ish appetizer, but she must have had big hair and good taste. I've served anything from jalapeno jelly to raspberry chipotle sauce over cream cheese (and at the holiday time, I do both on one block for the red and green fun). But, when I was inspired by a recipe for a cranberry sauce with horseradish in it (in an old Christmas cookbook), I knew it was something I could tweak for a block of cream cheese.

In my cookbook, they even served it over cream cheese...yes! The horseradish adds such a fun element of heat and kick to it. Perfect with the cream cheese. This was so delicious, y'all! Can't wait to serve it this week before our Thanksgiving meal.

Horsey Cranberry Sauce Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 (15 oz.) can whole-berry cranberry sauce
  • 1/4 cup minced onion
  • 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 (8 oz) package of cream cheese

Directions

  • Combine first five ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat.
  • Stirring continuously, bring to a boil. Reduce and simmer for five minutes.
  • Spoon sauce into a storage container and refrigerate for at least two hours.
  • Serve on its own at the Thanksgiving feast or over cream cheese, as an appetizer (see below for details).
  • Can be kept in the refrigerator for up to three days. (I like to make this a couple of days ahead of time to check one thing off my list!)

When ready to serve, place softened cream cheese on a serving platter. Spoon cranberry sauce over the cream cheese. Serve with crackers.

That's a mouthful of holiday right there.

  5. I've been making this for years (got it from the same book) and it has become a family favorite. I think my family thinks it's just not the holidays unless I make this recipe!! It's SOOO good and best if the sauce is kept warm and added as needed to the cream cheese.

  6. I had to do up a bunch of appetizers for a get together once and poured red pepper jelly over a brick of cream cheese and served with crackers as one of the dishes. I swear everyone there thought it was the most clever thing ever. I should have done two bricks because it was gone faster than all the more complicated dishes I'd made.
